Yes, in Petaluma, California, they organize an annual pageant to judge the world’s ugliest dog. A photographer dude called Ramin Rahimian decided to photograph 27 of these beauties in a series called Worst in show (which actually means best of the show) and we have got 12 of them for you. According to Ramin “[The judges] were looking not only for a high level of ugly but also for some sort of interesting personality and character,”
Ramin set up a stall with a black backdrop at the pageant, and requested the owners of these pooches if they’d be game for a glamour shots. He had each pup sit or stand on a table, and shot from a low angle to make his subjects appear heroic and statuesque.
Look at this distinguished old lady! This is Boolah and she is 17 years old. Her mom thinks she is part Chinese Crested and her dad thinks she is part Xoloitzcuintle. She lives in Payette, Idaho, right on the Oregon border. She is the child of a little cute Pomeranian and her dad, who was found roaming the Oregon desert. Missing most of her teeth, suffering from diabetes, deafness and bowed legs made her a perfect candidate for her third trip the contest in Petaluma.
What a serious face. This was Bubber’s first time in the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest. He is a Xoloitzcuintle breed, or Mexican Hairless Dog, from Arivaca, Arizona where he lives on a farm with a bunch of goats. He is a rescue dog who won over his foster mom and now loves to sit on her lap and follow her everywhere she goes.
Hello, my name is Frodo and I am a 12 ½ year old 5 pound Chinese Crested Hairless/Chihuahua mix. I live in Sparks Nevada with my large family. My parents adopted me when I was 10 weeks old. When my mom saw me, she told my dad that there was no way she was leaving without me. I had a head of bright orange hair and my mom found me irresistible. I love to be in charge and am very bossy. If my brothers and sisters get too excited, I am always there to put them back in line. My mom calls me the Prince. This is my first year in the contest but people have been telling my mom to enter me for many years!
Hello, my name is Grover, but my friends call me Grovie. I am a 12 year old Chinese Pug. My family got me as an 8 week old little round bundle of fur. I live in Santa Rosa with my loving family, the PartridgeÕs. I guess that makes me part of the Partridge Family! This is my parentÕs 8th year of entering in the WorldÕs Ugliest Dog Contest, and it is my 6th time participating. Every year I get a few more wrinkles and gray hair. Some people say I look like a seal, Jabba the Hut or an Ewok! I still enjoy curling up on the back of the couch, chewing my MomÕs hair, or sleeping all night on my DadÕs pillow and snoring in his ear. Recently I was diagnosed with diabetes. I am now on a special diet and I get insulin shots twice a day. Now I feel stronger, drink less water, lost some weight. I hope to set an example that doggies with diabetes can live good, happy and healthy lives.
This is the wise and regal from Butte County, California. He was rescued from a hoarder’s house. He’s gone a long way and has since been in movies, on magazine covers, and, most recently, he went to Hollywood to shoot an international Ray Ban ad. When he’s not working the stage at the contest, he is eating funnel cakes.
Ilsaboo – his friends call him Himisaboo – was born with this awesome mohawk. His big sister is old lady Boolah (17!). This is his third time in the contest. He snagged third place two years ago in the mutt category. He is obsessed with chasing his tail.
Hello, my name is Molly and I am 12 years old. I am a hairless Chihuahua. I live in Windsor, California with my best friend Jase! I started out at a puppy boarder and was given away in a ÔcontestÕ at Christmas time 12 years agoÉbut the one that won me thought I was ugly so she gave me to my family-who adore me! I love to go to the beach and play dead for treats! Oh and my favorite treats are figs off our fig tree in the backyard!
8. Rascal Deux
Rascal Deux is not a stranger to the ugly dog contest circuit and this is just his first year competing. He is from a winning family; his father, Rascal, won WorldÕs Ugliest Dog in 2002. His great grandfather, Chi Chi, is in the Guinness World Records for winning 7 World Titles, and both of his grandmothers, Lady Pink and Mai Tai, won 3 world titles each. Rascal Deux is also making a name for himself – recently cast in the star studded upcoming film The Adventures of Skanky Doo and appearing in a cartoon strip and documentary both named The Ugliest Dog.
Scamp walked the mean streets of Compton. His stealing ways ended him up in a shelter. On the day Scamp was to be put down, he was taken home to a foster penthouse condo in Manhattan Beach. Through Paws for Love, he finally found a home in Santa Rosa, CA. He is now a volunteer pet therapy dog. Last year, a judge at the contest commented that Scamp looks like Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.
Sweepee Rambo’s biggest fan is her dad who is always telling people Sweepee is the prettiest little blue eyed Chinese Crested Chihuahua he has ever known. She drives to work everyday with her dad. At 15 years old, Sweepee Rambo is blind in both eyes and wears doggie diapers.
Poor Zoomer almost did not make it. After a vicious dog attack left her with severe neck and facial wounds, her owners put her in a shelter. On the very day she was to be put down, members of S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals from Euthanasia) saved her. She along with three other dogs in this yearÕs contest owe their lives to Linda Elmquist, who nursed Zoomer back to health and passed her along to her current mom.
12. And Last but not the least, winner of the pageant, Quasi Modo.
Howdy, my name is Quasi Modo and I am 10yr old pit/dutch shepherd mix breed dog. I have traveled here from far away place called Loxahatchee Florida. I was abandoned at an animal shelter and because of my strange looks life was looking pretty grim. Luckily, one of the veterinarians there saw the sparkle in my eyes and took me home. I have multiple birth defects to my spine. My back is too short for the rest of my body and the parts went together in the worst possible way. In spite of this I still run, play and enjoy life to the fullest. My appearance can be a little unsettling to some ( I have had grown men jump on top of their cars to get away from me because they thought I was a hyena or Tasmanian devil) but once they get to know me I win them over with my bubbly personality. I love to meet new people and teach them about diversity. I have become a great ambassador for teaching people about acceptance and tolerance for things that are different. You should never judge a book by its cover! Just because an animal or person looks different doesnÕt mean theyÕre any less deserving of love. ItÕs OK to be different. I have been in the contest once before. Last year after my mom and dad were married in Las Vegas, by Clint Eastwood, they brought me here on their honeymoon.
